SENEGAL-AFRICA-SOCIETE / In Abuja, ECOWAS strengthens the skills of monitors of its early warning system – Senegalese Press Agency

From the APS special envoy, Abdou Kogne Sall

Abuja, Oct 8 (APS) – A workshop to strengthen the skills of monitors of the early warning system of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) opened on Tuesday in Abuja, the federal capital of Nigeria, noted the APS.

Early warning system analysts and IT technicians from member countries of the regional organization are participating in this three-day training session.

The particularity of this meeting lies in the incorporation of media actors into the network of monitors of the ECOWAS early warning system.

”We appreciate this new collaboration between the media and the management of the ECOWAS early warning system. It is part of our strategic plan to work with the media to spread peace information,” explained the acting director of the early warning system.

Speaking at the opening of the workshop, Onyinye Nkechi Onwuka said he hoped that media professionals would help this management to have more information.

”The aim of this workshop is to train these new monitors coming from the world of media, so that they understand the ECOWAS early warning system and learn to report information from the early warning system,” underlined Marcel Komy Boussou, head of the division responsible for system management and planning at the ECOWAS early warning directorate.

This structure expects media monitors to become relays, according to him.

”They are expected to provide information from the field on the basis of events and indicators that we have predefined, but at the same time to be the ECOWAS relay for the dissemination of peace information in member countries,” said Mr. Boussou.

On the first day of the workshop, participants were entitled to communications intended to familiarize them with the mechanisms and operating tools of the regional organization’s early warning system.
