Wednesday October 2, 2024, tags were discovered on several houses in the town center of Mesquer, a coastal town on the Guérande peninsula (-Atlantique).

An open investigation

The large graffiti was done during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. Some of them relate to the conflict in the Middle East with pro-Palestine and anti-Israel messages.

Some homes being holiday homes, their owners were informed of the damage by the municipal police.

Also notified, the Guérande gendarmerie came to observe the damage and opened an investigation following the complaints filed.

Owners we met told us that such damage is very rarely, if not not covered by insurance.

Thus, in addition to the inconvenience, there is added a sum of constraints and costs borne by the owners alone.

However, the tags are considered vandalism, it is a crime.

The law penalizes the graffiti artist with a maximum fine of 3,750 euros and a penalty of community service if the damage is considered “light” (requiring few repairs, with superficial damage and easily erased).

In the event of significant damage, a tag or graffiti can be punished by 2 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to €30,000.
