Senegal: former president Macky Sall resigns from his post as special envoy for the pact to lead a coalition candidate for the November legislative elections

Former Senegalese President Macky Sall has officially resigned from his post as special envoy for the Pact for People and the Planet, having recently been named head of the list of an opposition coalition for the legislative elections of November 17.

In a letter addressed to French President Emmanuel Macron, Macky Sall explained that he had made the decision to resign out of “concern to avoid conflicts of interest” as he returns to the Senegalese political scene six months after leaving the presidency in April.

Macky Sall was appointed special envoy by President Macron in November 2023, just before the end of his second term as president of Senegal (2012-2024).

“As we know, the circumstances of Senegalese political life, following the dissolution of the National Assembly, led me to take the lead of the Tako Walu Senegal coalition for the legislative elections scheduled for November 17,” declared the former president in his resignation letter.

“Under these conditions, and in order to avoid any conflict of interest, I would like to inform you that I have decided to resign from my mission as Special Envoy of the Paris Pact for people and the planet, effective October 9 , after the Hamburg Summit on Sustainable Development.

Sall was named this week head of the Tako Walu Senegal opposition coalition, which mainly includes the Alliance for the Republic, founded by him, and the Senegalese Democratic Party, led by Karim Wade, son of the former President Abdoulaye Wade.
