Bruno Retailleau brings together 21 prefects, including those from the and Pas-de-, to discuss the migration issue

Ln Tuesday October 8, Bruno Retailleau, Minister of the Interior, met with 21 prefects to address the migration issue. The prefects – responsible for implementing the directives of the Minister of the Interior on the ground – invited to this meeting come from the departments most affected by migration issues, in particular and Pas-de-.

During his appearance at the 20 Heures de 2 last week, Bruno Retailleau insisted on the need to “bring together the prefects of the departments where there is the most migratory disorder to expel more and regularize less”, while correcting what he calls the “holes in the racket” of the current system.

An approach inspired by Italy… and the United Kingdom?

During his meeting with the G7 Interior Ministers, Bruno Retailleau supported the migration vision of the Italian government, led by Giorgia Meloni. Italy has implemented a strict border control policy by signing agreements with countries such as Tunisia, to outsource the management of migratory flows.

The British plan to deport migrants to Rwanda, the “Safety of Rwanda Bill” was adopted by Parliament on the night of April 22 to 23, 2024 after two years of controversy. It allowed the expulsion to Rwanda of asylum seekers who entered the United Kingdom illegally regardless of their origin, but Keir Starmer, elected Prime Minister on July 5, 2024, confirmed his intention to abandon this contested project. In his first press conference as prime minister, he said the project “was dead and buried before it even started”.
