still too many accidents at level crossings

The Prefecture of Haute-Savoie wants to educate people about crossing level crossings.

The chief of staff of the prefect took part this Monday afternoon in an awareness-raising action in Machilly. Objective: to call for caution when approaching the department’s 182 level crossings. Haute-Savoie which remains strongly marked by the tragedy of Allinges in 2008.

Raising awareness in Machilly

The State representative, Emmanuelle Plantier-Lemarchand (Chief of Staff and road safety project manager) participated in this action alongside the President of the Haute-Savoie department, Martial Saddier, accompanied by Pauline Plagnat-Cantoreggi, mayor de Machilly, Vincent Pautrat, squadron leader, commander of the Departmental Road Safety Squadron (EDSR 74) and representatives of the SNCF. Objective: to remind people of the safety and caution rules when crossing a level crossing. Many have been adapted or even removed, but this is not technically possible in all cases.

2 fatal accidents in 2023

In Haute-Savoie, out of 182 level crossings, there were 2 fatal accidents in 2023 and 21 incidents (a figure up 10% compared to 2022). The department which remains marked by the tragedy of Allinges in 2008. The bus accident killed 7 middle school students (and led to the suicide of the deeply shocked teacher a few weeks later). The school vehicle got stuck on a level crossing before being hit by a train. It was June 2, 2008.
