A man under OQTF arrested for following a police vehicle with a drone

A 31-year-old man was arrested by police in Nîmes (), in the Mas-de-Mingue district, on Saturday evening. While officials from the Local Security Group (GSP) were carrying out checks around this neighborhood, a drone began to fly over the area, going back and forth above their heads, said a police source, confirming a informationObjective Gard.
When the police left the scene in their vehicle around 8 p.m., they noticed that the device continued to follow them.

Officials then quickly began searching to locate the drone pilot. After some checking, they spotted a man in the same area. When the latter realized that he was being spotted, he destroyed the device’s remote control, presumably to prevent investigators from implicating him.

The individual arrested is a Moroccan national, already known to the police. He had already been incarcerated for ten years and was subject to an Obligation to Leave French Territory (OQTF). He was subject to an inadmissibility order issued by the Lot Prefecture. The suspect was placed in police custody, then transferred to an administrative detention center (CRA) with a view to his expulsion to Morocco.

“A worrying imbalance between the technological means” of criminals and those of the police

“I am absolutely not surprised by this incident”reacts Abdel Nahass, eastern deputy zonal secretary, of the Un1té police union. “This individual, under OQTF, was caught in the act of surveillance of the police using a drone. Moreover, good luck regarding the procedure for expulsion from the national territory of this offender. C is a striking example of the reality we face today: delinquents and criminals are often better equipped than our police forces. This case reveals a worrying imbalance between the technological means of criminals and those of the agents responsible for them. Worse still, we sacrifice everyone’s safety as well as the means necessary to apprehend them, under the pretext of budgetary restrictions..

“This is unacceptable and unacceptable”continues the trade unionist. “Let’s take the example of the DIPN (Interdepartmental Directorate of the National Police, editor’s note) in , in the department of Meurthe-et-, which is still not equipped with drones, despite growing delinquency and enormous drug trafficking. How is it possible that we, the police, are deprived of the means to arrest delinquents for budgetary reasons? At this point, it must be made clear: public safety is priceless, but apparently, for some, it comes at a cost.”.
