Morocco/ Political return: The situation of the labor market in the second quarter of 2024

In the second quarter of 2024, the labor market situation continues to be affected by the drought. Thus, between the second quarter of 2023 and that of 2024, with the loss of 141,000 positions in rural areas, mainly unpaid, and the creation of 60,000 positions in urban areas, the overall volume of employment fell by 82,000 positions.

The agriculture, forestry and fishing sector recorded a drop of 152,000 jobs and that of construction lost 35,000 jobs. On the other hand, the industrial sector, including crafts, created 58,000 jobs, followed by services with 49,000 jobs.

The volume of unemployment increased by 90,000 people, 48,000 in urban areas and 42,000 in rural areas, reaching 1,633,000 people at the national level.

The unemployment rate thus rose from 12.4% to 13.1% at the national level (+0.7 point), from 16.3% to 16.7% in urban areas (+0.4 point) and from 5.7% to 6.7% in rural areas (+1 point). This rate remains higher among young people aged 15 to 24 (36.1%), graduates (19.4%) and women (17.7%).

The volume of employed workers in a situation of underemployment increased, between the second quarter of 2023 and that of 2024, from 983,000 to 1,042,000 people at the national level, from 549,000 to 552,000 people in urban areas and from 434,000 to 490,000 in rural environment. The underemployment rate thus increased from 9% to 9.6% at the national level, from 9.9% to 11.6% in rural areas and from 8.4% to 8.3% in urban areas.
