Natural spectacle: The Swiss sky is too cloudy to observe the Northern Lights

Northern lights were visible overnight from Sunday to Monday near the northeastern border of Switzerland. The Swiss sky was often too overcast to observe the phenomenon.

The weather conditions were not favorable for observing the Northern Lights, photographed here from the Austrian Vorderälpele.

The natural spectacle could be photographed from the Austrian Vorderälpele, the meteorological service Meteonews said on Monday on X. The latter published images of the Rhine valley with a glowing sky in the background.

Northern lights were expected this weekend due to a strong geomagnetic solar storm. The phenomenon occurs when the sun projects large quantities of plasma into space.

The American weather agency NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) expected category G3 storms on Friday. The northern lights observed in Switzerland last May were triggered by a category G5 storm, the highest.
