Kirk, a major Category 4 hurricane, is currently in the North Atlantic. It will not make landfall as a hurricane, but will indeed have an influence on the weather in Europe next week, warns MétéoSwiss.
According to projections from the United States National Weather Service, the powerful hurricane, currently located in the middle of the Atlantic, will weaken as it progresses towards the European continent. But if it will be less threatening, its passage will still be felt in Europe next week.
Currently, Kirk’s average winds are measured at around 230 km/h. But they will become much weaker as the depression progresses over land.
According to the MeteoSwiss blog, “stormy winds could occur in northern Portugal and Galicia. According to this forecast, the depression should continue its path across France and the Benelux and could also cause strong winds in its path.
A new “atmospheric river” is highly likely: large quantities of water vapor will be transported across the Atlantic. “This could lead to heavy precipitation over a large part of southern and western Europe,” adds MeteoSwiss.
A mind-blowing week
The coming week will therefore not be the brightest, even if clearings are still expected here and there, particularly Monday and Wednesday. On Tuesday it will become cloudy with frequent precipitation.
Moderate to strong winds are forecast throughout the week. The foehn will appear particularly in the Alpine valleys.
Maximum temperatures will be between 14 and 19°C over the entire period.
