Austria reaffirms its attachment to its “excellent relations” with Morocco

Alexander Schallenberg, Austrian Minister for Foreign Affairs

Austria reaffirmed, on Sunday, its attachment to the “excellent relations” which bind it to the Kingdom of Morocco.

In a press release published following the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) on the fishing and agricultural agreements between the EU and Morocco, the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs underlined, on its X account, that Vienna supports the joint statement by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the High Representative of the EU, Josep Borrell, on the CJEU decision.

The ministry, which made it clear that Austria “will carefully study” the Court’s decision, indicated that Austria reaffirms its excellent bilateral relations with the Kingdom of Morocco.

Following the CJEU’s decision, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and EU High Representative Josep Borrell issued a joint statement reaffirming the European bloc’s commitment to further conservation and strengthening close relations with Morocco in all areas, in accordance with the principle “pacta sunt servanda”.

This joint declaration, a rare political act which highlights the importance of Morocco and materializes the importance of the EU’s partnership with the Kingdom, reiterates the “great value” that the EU attaches to “its strategic partnership with Morocco, which is long-standing, vast and deep.”
