This could be the second attack committed by a wolf since the start of the year in this village of 250 inhabitants located in the Cévennes. Friday October 4, 2024, children discovered on their way to school a calf barely a day old disembowelled in a meadow near the Sénéchas church.

The mayor contacted the National Biodiversity Office (OFB) which took samples. An investigation is underway to determine the origin of this attack.

The OFB told me they suspected a lone wolf.

René Meurtin, mayor of Sénéchas

The calf was killed on a farm of 30 cows belonging to the breeder Martin Cébélieu, already affected eight years ago by the attack of a wolf, this time certified. The meadow is located in the middle from the village, next to a playground. “The residents are worried but no one has seen a wolf. However, the neighbor’s dogs barked all night and woke him up several times.” specifies Mayor René Meurtin.

This attack comes ten months after the death of a domestic dog disembowelled by a wolf in the village located in the north of Gard at the foot of Mount Lozère. Lozère which suffered wolf attacks a few weeks ago as we explained to you in this article.

This Monday, September 30, the Lozère Rural Coordination even went so far as to demand accountability from the prefect by depositing the carcass of a “predated” calf in front of the headquarters of the Lozère Territories management.
