Every two years, the Only (agricultural equipment use cooperative) is organizing an event entitled MecaSchools. This is the Cuma meeting for agricultural students. This year, 850 students gathered at the Cuma de Plume Chat Huant in Plessé (-Atlantique), this Thursday October 3, 2024.

Loire-Atlantique: 850 students gathered in a Cuma

“For several years, open days have been held in cumas for young people. MécaEcoles complements »explains Corinne Retiers, poultry breeder and volunteer member of Cuma.

Thus, all the speakers and organizers were able to demonstrate the positive aspects, the advantages of a Cuma to face the challenges of tomorrow. Indeed, in the next ten years, 50% of farmers will retire. The future is therefore a huge objective and cumas are perhaps solutions.

Setting up in cuma allows you to reduce investment, practice more virtuous techniques and have more efficient equipment.

“Joining a Cuma is a wealth on many levels. Know how to surround yourself,” continues and advises Hervé Mérand, president of the Plessé cuma.

This cuma brings together 45 farms, four employees and one apprentice. “During the day when the weather is nice, we are in the farmers’ fields. If it rains, we take care of repairing and maintaining the equipment,” says one of the employees. “We must get used to the different expectations of farmers ».

“Make a finger touch”

“This year is the first time that the event is of such magnitudewith so many visitors,” points out Julie Azema, director of the Pays de la Loire cuma federation.

In the field and in front of professionals capable of answering their questions about the reality of work, the young people were able to discover what a cuma was.

“For us, the challenge is to point out those who will settle down in the future,” emphasizes Julie Azema.

16 workshops to discover

The 850 elderly students from 16 to 23 years old were divided into groups throughout the day. If the majority of them came from Pays de la Loireothers came from like Les Côtes-d’Armor or Morbihan. That’s a total of 24 establishments.

The first part of the day was devoted to the discovery of 16 workshops on: installations, tillage, new technologies, the strength of the collective, etc.

Each group was able to attend 12 workshops, in ten-minute increments.

In the afternoon, the young people were able to attend a open field demonstration1 km from the Cuma.

During this day, a clear and important message was transmitted: “joining a cuma means staying in a network”.
