OMVS warns of weeks of rising water levels

Since August 2024, significant rainfall recorded in the upper basin of the Senegal River, upstream of the Manantali dam, has caused significant flows on the Bafing, the main tributary of the Senegal River. These flows, stored by the Manantali dam since the start of the rainy season, made it possible to regulate the rise in water levels in the valley.

However, a press release from the Organization for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS), published on October 3, informs that the water retention of the dam has now reached its normal management level at 208.05 meters IGN . “Since Thursday October 3, 2024, the reservoir has been filled and the normal management level of 208.05 m IGN has been reached. Consequently, the operator began to discharge excess quantities of water entering the reservoir”
According to the latter, this situation will prolong the passage of the flood wave in the Senegal River valley for a few additional weeks. Faced with this risk, the OMVS calls on populations residing in the Valley and the Delta to maintain vigilance during the passage of this new flood wave” and “to take all necessary precautions to prevent possible overflowing of the river, particularly in case of further rains in the region. »
