Spain reiterates its commitment to “strategic partnership” with Morocco – Today Morocco

Spain reiterated, on Friday, its attachment to the “strategic partnership” with Morocco and its determination to “preserve and promote” this partnership, following the judgments of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) on the agreements of fishing and agriculture between the EU and the Kingdom.

Speaking before the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Congress of Deputies, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares affirmed that his country’s government will continue to “promote” relations with Morocco.

“Our commitment and our attachment to the stability of the relationship with Morocco is firm and will not be altered,” underlined Mr. Albares, assuring that Madrid will continue to “work with the European Union and Morocco to preserve and pursue the development of this relationship.

The minister, on the other hand, highlighted the importance of the “strategic partnership” between the EU and Morocco for both parties and also for Spain, and the “advantages” that this partnership has brought to the various sectors including fishing, agriculture and Moroccan-Spanish trade.

He recalled, in this context, that Spain’s trade with Morocco reached 22 billion euros, just behind the United States and the United Kingdom.

Spain, like many other countries, will continue to encourage the “privileged” relationship between the EU and Morocco, Mr. Albares further indicated.

The Spanish official also addressed the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, recalling that his country’s position on this subject was highlighted in the joint declaration of April 7, 2022, made public following the audience that HM King Mohammed VI granted to President of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, affirming that the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara is “the most serious, credible and realistic basis” for the resolution of this conflict.

More and more European countries and the rest of the world are joining Spain in this direction, underlined Mr. Albares, citing in particular.
