Fines for foreign drivers too often remain unpaid: here is the solution put in place

Foreign drivers checked on Belgian roads under the influence of alcohol or drugs will have to directly pay a deposit of 1,260 euros from January 1, 2025. This is what Het Nieuwsblad indicated, based on information from the office of the resigning Minister of Justice Paul Van Tigchelt.

The draft royal decree was presented in 2023 by the resigning Minister of Mobility Georges Gilkinet. Fines for foreign drivers are too often unpaid today, according to the cabinet.

From next year, the police may immediately require a foreign driver under the influence to pay a deposit of 1,260 euros. This amount will be deducted when the judge at the police court renders his verdict.

The amount of 1,260 euros is the minimum fineincluding legal costs, for people who are caught under the influence of drugs for the first time, said the FPS Justice.

For those who cannot or do not want to pay, the vehicle will be blocked by the police for 96 hours. At the end of this period, if payment has still not been made, the vehicle may be seized. The owner will then have to pay, in addition, towing and impound costs.
