Rental advertisements are becoming increasingly rare, this is the observation made by the Paris town hall. The rental supply in the capital has been divided by three since 1945 according to figures from INSEE. In 1954, fewer than 50,000 homes were vacant. In 2020, their number is estimated at 260,000 housing units, or nearly 19% of the rental stock.
As for the owners’ representatives, it is the state of the apartments that poses a problem.“These accommodations are unsuitable for rental when the electricity is not up to standard, when the windows are not up to standard, when you have a toilet on the landing, that excludes many more people,” declares Jean Pinsolle, president of the Chamber of Owners of Greater Paris.
These private housing units in the capital belong to multiple owners who already own at least five properties. One in three homes is empty, for example, in the 6th, 7th and 8th arrondissements. “There are many owners in Paris who acquired properties in the 60s and 70s which have aged over time and who now own a lot of apartments and who no longer want to manage because they are older and therefore our subject is that it is now becoming enormous and we reach nearly 300,000 empty second homes”, explains Jacques Baudrier, deputy (PC) at Paris town hall in charge of housing.
To force owners to rent, Paris town hall will ask the Minister of Housing to increase the tax on vacant housing as part of the finance law presented next Thursday.
