Just under 30 minutes. It was this short period of time that plunged the east of Paris into chaos on the evening of October 4, 1994. Florence Rey and Audry Maupina young couple adrift, embark on the failed robbery of a pound in Pantin (Seine-Saint-Denis). The rest is only an escalation of violence, which will end in fatal shooting in the capital. In total, five people died. A look back at this affair which hit the headlines.
A bad meeting during a demonstration
Behind this bloodbath, a young couple without history. Both are students, he in philosophy, she in medicine. Involved in several far-left movements, Audry Maupin, 25, and Florence Rey, 20, met during a demonstration Abdelhakim Dekhar. The latter will play an important role in the act of the two lovebirds.
The couple then begins to become radicalized. Their new acquaintance offers them a “coup”. This involves attacking the Pantin prepound in Seine-Saint-Denis. The goal? To recover the guards’ weapons in order to be able to attack banks in the near future. The three friends buy shotguns to carry out their project.
Hostage taking and fatal shooting
On October 4, at 9:30 p.m., the trio burst into the prepound. The guards were attacked with tear gas and rendered incapacitated. Several revolvers are stolen. While Abdelhakim Dekhar fled on foot, the couple going to head for a taxi. They take the driver and the passenger, a doctor, hostage.
Forced to drive with a gun pointed at him, the driver arrived at Place de la Nation. That’s when he sees a police car. In order to get their attention, he rushes into the vehicle. As they go out, taken aback, the police are shot by Florence Rey and Audry Maupin. Two officers are fatally injured. The taxi driver is also shot by the young man. Two passers-by were injured by the exchange of fire.
Shooting in the Bois de Vincennes
The bloody duo manages to escape police fire, and enter another car, taking the driver hostage. A chase then begins and ends in the Bois de Vincennes, not far from Saint-Mandé in Val-de-Marne. A roadblock set up by the police stopped the vehicle.
A new shootout breaks out. A policeman on motorcycle is shot dead. The driver who was taken hostage was hit in the knee. Finally, the agents manage to shoot Audry Maupin. Hit by several bullets, he collapsed. Florence Rey is arrested by the police. Seriously injured, his companion died a few days later.
A heavy sentence served
After the astonishment, the affair sparked a lively media frenzy. Florence Rey is presented as a new “Pasonaria”. His photography is broadcast on television and in newspapers. The political world is also deeply marked. Certain names on the right and the extreme right do not hesitate to call for a reinstatement of the death penalty.
The trial of the young woman, who remained silent, opened in 1998 before the Assize Court. The accused hardly speaks, and her lawyers plead the fragility and the influence exercised by Audry Maupin. She is condemned to a sentence of 20 years of criminal imprisonment. With the reduced sentences, she will finally be released in 2009.
