carers’ day took place in Nîmes

Carers’ Day promotes and supports caregivers in .

On October 3, 2024, Nîmes hosted the Gardoises Days for Carers. This event highlights the 63,500 loved ones caregivers in the department, including 23,500 children. These “everyday superheroes” provide valuable help to loved ones who are losing their independence, whether due to age, a disability or a chronic illness.

The Gard Departmental Council is committed to supporting these caregivers. It develops solutions to share information, offer respite, and promote their role in society. A major challenge remains raising awareness among caregivers themselves, who are often isolated and lack information on the systems that can help them. Nearly one in two caregivers suffer from stress, anxiety and fatigue. Many of them are also unaware of their caregiver status.

“The Gard Caregiver Days take place in public spaces to challenge passers-by about the role of caregivers, to make them aware that we will all, one day or another, be in the situation of being a caregiver or helped”
Christophe SERRE, 1st Deputy Vice-President for Autonomy of the Elderly and Disabled

Systems exist to support them: day care, respite solutions, as well as home help for up to 36 hours at a time. The Departmental Council has also increased its financial support for caregivers, going from €105,000 in 2023 to €250,000 in 2024, with the support of the CNSA (National Solidarity Fund for Autonomy).

The helping resource spaces, deployed across the department, play a crucial role. These one-stop shops, managed by local associations, offer psychological support, training, and information on the rights and assistance available. Among these partners are the Association of Carers of (ADAO) and the House of Carers of Alès.

Gard Caregiver Day will continue until November 5, 2024 with events in Uzès, Calvisson, and Alès, to continue to inform and support caregivers in Gard.
