Tensions in the Middle East – Belgium releases two million euros for education for Palestinian children

This aid will be implemented by UNRWA, the United Nations agency responsible for supporting Palestinian refugees in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, Lebanon and Syria. It will be used primarily to purchase school materials, the security of school buildings, transport to schools and psychological support. Some 150,000 children should benefit.

“At the moment, of course, the situation in Gaza is the most serious,” the minister explained. “Since the start of the war almost a year ago, children have barely been able to go to class. Of the 183 UNRWA school buildings in Gaza, 156 have been damaged or destroyed. In nearly In 90% of schools, it is impossible to teach.

The problems are not limited to Gaza, however. In the West Bank, parents fear sending their children to school due to ever more violent intimidation from Israeli settlers, notes the minister. They attacked a primary school near the town of Jericho. Young men beat the children and teachers with clubs and damaged the building.

In refugee camps in Lebanon, Syria and Jordan, education also remains a problem. Without education, there is no prospect of progress and a better future, the minister further points out. “And where there is no hope or perspective, the extremes easily gain ground.”
