DAKAR, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) — Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on Thursday called on his compatriots to get involved in the fight against breast cancer, on the occasion of the international “Pink October” campaign dedicated to the fight against this disease.

The government “remains committed to strengthening public awareness to raise awareness of the disease and means of prevention,” he said in a message published on the social network X.

“Each year, in Senegal, 1,838 new cases of breast cancer are recorded, with some 976 deaths over the same period,” added Mr. Faye, emphasizing that “behind these figures, we must also see that these women taken away are wives, mothers, sisters, leaving behind many orphans and devastated families.

“Our responsibility is to talk about it and raise awareness among as many women as possible, but above all to go for early screening. This screening makes it possible to treat cancer very early,” he continued, welcoming the decision of the Ministry of Health to reduce the price of mammography from 30,000 CFA francs (approximately 50 dollars) to 15,000 FCFA (approximately 25 dollars) throughout the month of October.
