This major control action took place between Thursday October 3 at 7 p.m. and Friday October 4 at 1 a.m. “From La Panne to Tournai, checkpoints have been set up on both sides of the border. This action was organized in collaboration with the French police services,” explains the Belgian federal police in a press release.

The controls focused on phenomena such as roving gangs of thieves, drug and arms trafficking, and human trafficking. The police intended to send a clear message: “the border cannot constitute a refuge zone for criminals”. In addition to fixed checkpoints, mobile police teams have also been deployed to intercept suspicious vehicles and redirect them to a checkpoint.

And law enforcement had their hands full with drugs and weapons found as well as a chase ending in an accident. The results communicated by the police are as follows:

  • 16 legal reports drawn up, among other things, for possession of narcotics and possession of prohibited weapons
  • A person arrested judicially because reported for a detention order
  • 22 administrative arrests of migrants in transit
  • 72 reports drawn up for traffic offenses, including 13 for driving under the influence of alcohol and 7 for driving under the influence of drugs.

“The driver of a vehicle attempted to escape control and fled. A pursuit was initiated and the fleeing vehicle crashed in Celles, around fifteen kilometers from the French border. The occupants fled and are still being sought. The investigation continues,” the police finally said.

Other operations of this type will be implemented in the coming weeks. To be continued.
