New high school equivalency created in Canada for NWT residents

The new Canadian Adult Education Certificate will be available in the Northwest Territories starting November 1, 2024.

This new certificate allows adults who do not have a high school diploma to obtain a high school diploma equivalency. This opens new doors for them to find employment, pursue post-secondary education or access other education and training opportunities, including apprenticeships.

Obtaining the Canadian adult education certificate is conditional on passing five tests assessing skills in reading, writing, mathematics, science and social studies. These tests allow adult learners to demonstrate their ability to communicate, process information, solve problems, and think critically.

Tests must be taken in person at one of the NWT testing centers. MECF regional service centers will work directly with the client and a center representative to find a location and time where the individual can take the exam. Interested individuals must first confirm their eligibility by contacting the regional service center closest to them.

The Government of the Northwest Territories offers the Canadian Adult Education Certificate free of charge to NWT adult learners who do not have a high school diploma or the previous General Education Diploma (GED).
