Swiss team: a neophyte and six returns

The doors of the Swiss team remain more open than ever: this is the message delivered by Murat Yakin before the two October meetings against Serbia and Denmark.

The coach has thus included a neophyte in his list of 24 players called to challenge Serbia on October 12 in Leskovac and Denmark three days later in Saint-Gall. This is FC St. Gallen running back Christian Witzig. ‘He deserves to have a chance. He is a player who hits and is dangerous in front of the cage, underlines Murat Yakin. The Nations League must allow us to launch such players.’

But after the two defeats conceded to Denmark and against Spain in matches where Switzerland, according to its coach, ‘had to face many headwinds’, there will still be a demand for results during this October gathering. Switzerland must pick up the points necessary to stay in League A and, above all, to maintain its top seed for the draw for the preliminary round of the 2026 World Cup which will take place on December 13 in Zurich. “Above all, I want us to evolve in a more disciplined way in defense,” slips Murat Yakin.

Current form

Six players are also returning to the selection. Philipp Köhn will be the third goalkeeper behind Gregor Kobel and Yvon Mvogo. Edimilson Fernandes, Ulisses Garcia Cédric Zesiger, Dan Ndoye and Andi Zeqiri were also selected by Murat Yakin who recalls, with the choices made in this list, that the form of the moment is essential.

In front of the press, Murat Yakin lowered his guard somewhat to deliver two valuable lessons. Brilliant with AS Monaco, Denis Zakaria should play in central defense alongside Manuel Akanji and Ricardo Rodriguez. ‘This position can also allow him to fully express himself,’ underlines the coach who had already mentioned this idea last month.

Finally, it will be up to Zeki Amdouni to take Ruben Vargas’ place in attack. ‘I liked his performance against Spain,’ he admits. He can really bring a lot to the table just behind the center forward.’
