22 searches in Ontario and Quebec including

On the morning of Thursday, October 3, the Police Service (SPL) collaborated for the second time in two days with the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) in an operation targeting people linked to a “false representatives” fraud scheme.

After having deployed personnel to carry out arrests on Wednesday October 2, actions whose results are still awaited, the operation of Thursday October 3 would target a completely different, larger network, however engaging in the same type of fraud.

This time, to carry out some 22 searches, the SPL and the SQ joined forces with the Montreal City Police Service, the Longueuil Agglomeration Police Service and the Toronto Police Service.

Interventions take place in Laval, Sherbrooke, Brossard, Montreal, Saint-Canut, Saint-Lin-Laurentides, Joliette, Terrebonne, Sainte-Thérèse and in the Toronto region.

This imposing operation stems from an investigation initiated in the fall of 2023 and mobilizes more than 250 police and civilian resources, making it possible to target more than 28 people who will be arrested or met by investigators.

Fraud targeting seniors

“False representative” fraud is a stratagem which consists of calling a senior on their residential line pretending to be a representative of a financial institution.

During the call, the representative mentions having spotted potential fraud in the victim’s bank account.

In order to remedy this situation, the victim must hand over their bank cards as well as the personal identification number (PIN) of their cards to the false representative.

An accomplice comes to the victim’s house to collect the cards.

Some fraudsters go to a banking institution to withdraw money from bank accounts, while others make various purchases.

Prevention

“Never disclose personal or banking information over the telephone,” reminded the SQ, via press release, on Wednesday, October 2. Hang up and call the official number of your financial institution. Do not give your cards to someone who comes to your home, that is not the way financial institutions operate.”

Please also note that any information on criminal acts or suspicious events can be communicated to the Criminal Information Center of the Sûreté du Québec at 1 800 659-4264. (B.L.)
