One year since the Hamas attack: McGill University will limit access to its campus

McGill University will limit access to its campus on October 5, 6 and 7 to “avoid its campus being destabilized” during this period which marks one year since the Hamas attack in Israel.

The University wishes to avoid its activities being disrupted by commemorative events planned on its grounds bringing together “a significant number of people not part of [sa] university community,” it says on its website.

Thus, only students, staff and “essential visitors” will be admitted to the campus, which will otherwise be closed to the general public.

Classes will also have to be held remotely “unless they require on-site attendance”.

Exams may take place in person and events taking place on campus must be approved by the management of the establishment.

Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war, the McGill University campus has been the center of numerous protests.

“During the past few months, the University has been the scene of numerous peaceful protests and commemorations,” the University said in a message to its student community.

“Unfortunately, we have also seen incidents that, beyond the bounds of the law and University policies, have upset some people, prevented members of our community from accessing our places of learning and work, and caused material damage,” we add.

A pro-Palestinian encampment was also erected in front of the establishment for several months before being dismantled in July.

The University is also asking its student community to remain alert regarding access to campus on October 8.

The restrictions announced are valid for the Macdonald campus as well as the downtown campus.
