Keur Mbaye (Dagana), Oct 2 (APS) – Farmers in the department of Dagana (north) will receive new agricultural equipment with a view to increasing rice production, we learned from the general director of the Société d development and exploitation of land in the Senegal and Falémé river delta (SAED), Alassane Ba.
He made this promise on Tuesday in Keur Mbaye, in the same department, during the first stage of a three-day initial contact visit.
”Dagana represents more than 60% of the country’s rice production. All the complaints we have collected are linked to the lack of agricultural equipment and land development. With the hierarchy (the Ministry of Agriculture), we are in the process of strengthening agricultural equipment to intensify production,” assured Mr. Ba.
According to him, it is urgent to provide farmers in this department with tractors and combine harvesters.
SAED’s technical services are in the process of renovating the rice fields, at the same time as they are helping farmers to “restore Dagana its status as the agricultural heart of Senegal”, said Alassane Ba.
”This tour is an opportunity to find out about the difficulties faced by farmers”, it also gives us the opportunity to find ”solutions […] to the overproduction noted for several years,” he explained.
”We also have the ambition to set up a project for the universal solarization of irrigation schemes in village irrigated areas, with the aim of reducing the excessive cost of electricity, which is a real problem for farmers”, added Mr. Bâ.
He assures that the SAED program called ”Miracle Solution” will help resolve the problems that farmers in this part of the country are facing.
Alassane Ba also promises to discuss with Mauritania’s agricultural officials to fight against the avian invasion.
