SENEGAL-ENVIRONNEMENT-EQUIPMENT / The town of Pikine has an air quality measuring station – Senegalese press agency

Dakar, Oct 2 (APS) – The town of Pikine (suburb of Dakar) has just been equipped with a new air quality measuring station, indicates a press release sent to APS on Wednesday.

The inauguration ceremony chaired by the prefect Hamdy Mbengue, took place in the presence of the mayor of Pikine, Abdoulaye Timbo, the director of Environmental Regulation and Control (DREC), Baba Dramé, but also officials of the environmental and social unit of CETUD (Executive Council for Sustainable Urban Transport), according to the same source.

”The new Pikine air quality measuring station is part of a network of seven fixed air quality measuring stations, distributed between the departments of Dakar, Guédiawaye and Pikine” , specifies the text, emphasizing that it was acquired as part of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project in partnership with CETUD.

Its operation was entrusted to the Air Quality Management Center (CGQA), housed at the DREC”, according to the text which also reports, that with the help of this device, ”the quality of the air is measured continuously.

In addition, underlines the press release, from this device, ”the levels of air pollution are disseminated daily in the form of an air quality index (AQI), a tool to help with decision-making and information for populations to preserve their health.

The document recalls that “the Senegalese economy loses 900 billion CFA francs per year due to dysfunctions caused by automobile pollution, congestion, road insecurity and noise”.

”These losses correspond to 6% of national GDP (CETUD 2022 study). Atmospheric pollution linked to road traffic is the most costly externality for the community with 56% of induced losses. It is followed by congestion which contributes to 26% of nuisances and to a lesser extent, by road safety and greenhouse gas emissions which represent respectively 10% and 7% before the contribution of noise (1%). , we read in the text.

Thus, ”the CETUD sustainable urban mobility plan (PMUS) seeks to reverse this trend by promoting a multimodal and inclusive metropolitan transport system, supported by priority investment in clean and active capacity modes”.
