For 40 years he lived in his studio located in the migrant workers’ hostel in Amandiers-Troënes, in the 20th arrondissement of Paris. Niabaly Djiby, 81, was deported last week for sheltering his son, not letting him “sleeping on the street”.
This eviction moved neighboring residents of this home, but also elected officials. This Wednesday morning, around fifty people gathered to support the retiree and protest against the decision of ADEF habitat, manager of this home. Niabaly Djiby has been the tenant since it opened in 1983.
“They don’t want me to stay with my son, but I can’t leave my son, he’s always next to me”explains Niabaly Djiby. “He has never missed his rent which is directly deducted from the bank (…) they had him evicted to bring other people”pleads Aliouhamady Sy, another resident of the Amandiers-Troënes home.
As a sign of solidarity with the retiree evicted this morning, elected officials from the 20th arrondissement, already alerted by the evictions which have been increasing in this home since the start of the year, were present. There have been 4 expulsions, explains one of them.
“Most evictions are linked to over-occupancy, whatever the age of the resident whatever their trajectory”notes Michel Jallamion, deputy mayor in charge of public relations. For his part, Nicolas Corato, federal secretary of ADEF habitat declares that “the situation is becoming dangerous because of this over-occupancy. We can no longer guarantee the dignity and safety of residents”
“We have the right to receive a loved one to have a social life when we go home and they don’t have the right!”retorts Laurent Sorel, Paris advisor.
A meeting is planned for this Thursday between the shelter’s delegates and management to discuss the situation of Niabaly Djiby and prevent further expulsions.
