Aliou Cissé is no longer the coach of the “Lions”

It’s now official. The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has just announced the end of its collaboration with Aliou Cissé.

At the head of the national team since 2015, the native of Ziguinchor will have won the 2022 African Cup of Nations while reaching the final in 2019. Cissé will also have qualified the Lions of Téranga for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups (round of 16).

Here is the press release from the Cameroon Football Federation (FSF) on the non-renewal of Aliou Cissé’s contract.

The Senegalese Football Federation informs public opinion that it received this Monday, September 30, 2024 a confidential letter from Madam the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Madam Khady Diéne GAYE not approving the amendment of renewal for one year of the contract of the coach of the national team A, Aliou CISSE for the following reasons: failure to achieve the objectives assigned as part of the amendment of November 7, 2022 which expired on August 31, 2024 (victory at CAN 2023 and qualification for the quarter-finals at the 2022 World Cup), the regression of our national team in the FIFA rankings and the risk of disaffection between our national selection and the Senegalese in general.

The authority deduced as a consequence of its decision that Mr. CISSE was no longer covered by a contract duly approved by the State of Senegal and could no longer lead the national team from that moment on.

Madam Minister ultimately invited the FSF to take the necessary measures to ensure the participation of Senegal in the qualifying phase for CAN 2025.

The Emergency Committee of the FSF extended to the members of the Executive Committee met today, Tuesday October 1, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. to analyze the situation arising from said correspondence and took the following decisions:

1) Takes note of the decision of the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture not to approve the renewal of the contract of the Coach of the National A Team of Senegal, Mr. Aliou CISSE;

2) Gives mandate to the President of the FSF and the National Technical Director to set up an interim staff for the continuity of the team’s participation in the qualifying phase for the “CAN 2025”, taking into account the urgent nature of the situation;

3) Cancels the press conference to publish the list of players for the 3rd and 4th day matches against Malawi scheduled for Friday October 4, 2024;

4) Decides to have the FSF Communication department publish the said list on the same day at 10 a.m. on its website and on its digital platforms;

The FSF would like to thank Mr. Aliou CISSE for his good collaboration and his brilliant results at the head of the various national selections that he has had to manage since his arrival in 2011 and wishes him every success for the future.
