UN Tourism and TUI Care Foundation announce grants for rural artisans in Africa

  • UN Tourism and TUI Care Foundation are inviting artisans from rural destinations in Africa to apply for the “Colorful Cultures” small grants initiative.
  • Applications can now be submitted for projects in Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Gambia, Tunisia and Zambia.

UN Tourism and TUI Care Foundation launch “Colorful Cultures”, a call for proposals aimed at supporting the creative talent of a continent. The initiative aims to empower local artists and artisans, particularly women and youth, in rural tourism destinations in selected African countries. These projects aim to maximize the benefits of tourism for local artists and artisans, fostering sustainable economic opportunities, while preserving cultural heritage and strengthening community empowerment and engagement.

UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “Tourism has the potential to bring significant socio-economic benefits to rural areas, while preserving cultural heritage and creating jobs. We are proud to launch UN Tourism’s first-ever Small Grants Program – Tourism for Rural Development. ‘Colorful Cultures’, supported by TUI Care Foundation, illustrates our commitment to sustainable development and the empowerment of local communities. »

Thomas Ellerbeck, President of TUI Care Foundation, agreed, saying: “This collaboration with UN Tourism demonstrates our commitment to the sustainable development of the tourism sector. By supporting artists and artisans, we preserve cultural heritage while promoting economic growth and social well-being in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities. »

Call for applications: Supporting artists and artisans

Civil society organizations and non-governmental organizations are invited to present projects that benefit artists and artisans in rural tourism destinations in Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Gambia, Tunisia and Zambia . Each selected project may receive a maximum grant of EUR 20,000. The program aims to strengthen the capacity of artists and artisans to integrate into the tourism economy, improve their visibility in tourist destinations and increase the availability of support services in rural areas.

“Colorful Cultures” is part of UN Tourism’s innovative small grants program – Tourism for Rural Development, entirely dedicated to promoting tourism for sustainable development in rural areas. To launch the program, the United Nations Specialized Agency welcomed TUI Care Foundation as its first financial partner.

The call for applications will close on December 2.
