Cashier at IKEA, he “forgot” to scan his friends’ items: the brand demands more than 60,000 euros

An IKEA cashier “forgot” to scan his friends’ items: the brand discovered this and is seeking damages.

Five young people in their twenties, from Erpe-Mere, Londerzeel and Ixelles, could face prison sentences for several thefts committed in the IKEA store in Zaventem. One of the suspects, a cashier at the establishment, allegedly facilitated the departure of his friends with furniture without them having to pay.

The irregularities were brought to light by management in June 2022, leading to an internal investigation. This revealed that the cashier had allowed his partner to make at least 25 free purchases, as reported by our colleagues from the Flemish press. The prosecutor explained that the young man simulated scanning his friends’ items, who then took an action at the payment terminal, receiving only a blank receipt as proof of purchase.

The actions were captured by the store’s surveillance cameras. The accomplices went in the same car each time, made their purchases separately, before leaving the scene in separate vehicles.

IKEA is seeking damages of more than 66,000 euros, an amount contested by the defense. Four of the suspects, including the cashier, admitted their involvement, but denied belonging to an organized gang. Their lawyers argued for community service sentences.
