“97% of Île-de- is considered a medical desert” according to the URPS

More than a million and a half people in the Ile-de- region do not have a primary care doctor. And while 62% of Île-de-France was in a situation of medical desert in 2022, the situation gets worse. “97% of Île-de-France is considered a medical desert”announces on France Bleu the deputy secretary general of the URPS, the regional union of health professionals. “A medical desert is a place where it is difficult to see a doctor, whether because there simply are not one geographically or because waiting times are too long”explain Dr Natacha Regensberg de Andreis.

The doctor is concerned about the aging of both the population and doctors. “Half of our doctors are over 60 and a quarter of them work after 65.” To remedy this, Natacha Regensberg de Andreis proposes that doctors with multiple pensions can continue to contribute to their retirement, while taking on the weight of administrative costs. “We can also help young doctors. Many of them are reluctant to settle down because the conditions are not at all attractive. Currently, a doctor who wants to settle down, the first question he asks himself is is ‘will I get help to settle in’?”
