The electricity bill of the State of Senegal, a headache for the Ministry of Energy

The electricity bill for Senegalese administrations appears to be particularly high. According to the Secretary General of the Ministry of Energy, Oil and Mines, Cheikh Niane, it amounted to 71.6 billion FCFA in 2023.

He chaired the opening ceremony of a capacity building workshop for Directors of General Administration and Equipment (DAGE) and equivalents, focused on energy saving. The objective of this workshop, he explained, is to “strengthen the capacities of DAGEs and similar ministries and public structures in Senegal in terms of energy saving and reduction of the public electricity bill” .

Cheikh Niane also highlighted that national electricity consumption is constantly increasing, with an additional 583 GWh recorded between 2022 and 2023. However, he believes that it is possible to curb this trend through a more rapid deployment of energy programs. scale in the electricity sector. He added that the national energy saving potential, just for the electricity sub-sector, is estimated at around 36% for Senegal.
