Demonstration this Tuesday in Brussels: a thousand Belgian and European workers gathered for better working conditions

The demonstration will bring together Belgian workers and those from at least eight other European countries (, Germany, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Italy, Spain and Finland), as well as European unions.

They intend to denounce the “levelling down of working conditions” caused by the rules relating to public procurement in the EU. According to research by European union UNI Europa, “half of public tenders in the EU are awarded solely on the basis of the lowest price, often due to procurement rules that favor the lowest price “. However, “the standards created by public markets influence wages and working conditions throughout the private sector,” explain the unions.

The latter are therefore calling for reforms to the European directive on public procurement “which strengthen collective bargaining, improve working conditions and guarantee quality services to citizens”.

The strike notices filed in the security, cleaning and catering sectors to allow workers to participate in the demonstration have a significant impact on the country’s airports. All flights departing from Charleroi and Zaventem airports are canceled.
