Pope Francis ended a turbulent visit to Belgium on Sunday by reaffirming his traditional positions on women and abortion and demanding Catholic bishops stop covering up for predatory priests, a scandal that has devastated the credibility of the Church all over the world.

Francis returned to the main thorny issues of his trip to Belgium during his press conference aboard the plane taking him back to Rome, praising the late King Baudouin as a “ saint » for having abdicated in 1990 rather than signing a law legalizing abortion.

« It takes a politician who wears pants to do that “, Francis said, using a Spanish expression. “It takes courage,” he added, specifying that the process of Baudouin’s beatification was taking its course.

The pope drew criticism from some in Belgium for praying at Baudouin’s tomb and for calling the abortion law ” homicide “, as abortion remains a political issue in Belgium, with new proposals to extend the legal limit for abortion from 12 to 18 weeks.

« The doctors who do this are – allow me the word – hitmen. They are hitmen .”,”And on this point you cannot argue. You are killing a human life.” He declared.
