Senegal has undertaken a complete review of its contracts with foreign partners, in accordance with an electoral promise from President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. This process, which began a few weeks ago, involves a committee responsible for examining all agreements in force. The aim is to check whether foreign partners respect their legal and contractual obligations. In the event of a breach, the president wishes to rebalance these contracts.
This initiative concerns agreements in crucial sectors such as oil, gas, mining, and infrastructure. Previously, some contracts had been described as disadvantageous by the president and were part of his national reform agenda, focused on sovereignty and social transformation.
During an interview, the president insisted on the importance of not targeting a single nation, such as France, in his sovereignty speech. He stressed that the French language remains an important cultural heritage. Senegal wishes to maintain and strengthen its historic relations with Western countries while remaining free to choose its international partners.
As for the orientation of some African countries towards Russia, the president expressed respect for their sovereign decisions. He affirmed that Senegal will make its own choices in terms of international cooperation without being subject to external impositions.
