Serge Janquin, former deputy mayor of Bruay-la-Buissière, died at the age of 81

An emblematic figure of the left in Pas-de-, Serge Janquin died this Saturday, September 28 at the age of 81.

Serge Janquin, a major political figure on the left of Pas-de-Calais, died at the age of 81 this Saturday, September 28.

This certified professor of economics and social sciences was a young teacher when he began his political career in his native Artois. First, as mayor of Labuissière at the end of the 1980s. Following the municipal merger with Bruay-en-Artois, in 1989 he became mayor of the new municipality of Bruay-la-Buissière.

“The flags of the Town Hall and the Labuissière Town Hall are at half-mast. A guest book will be available, from tomorrow (Tuesday, Editor’s note) and until Thursday, at the Maison des services and in the town hall annex de Labuissière”, indicates the town hall on Facebook.

Re-elected to the Assembly until 2017

In 1993, he won the legislative elections in the 10th constituency of Pas-de-Calais and perpetuated this socialist stronghold until 2017. From 1997 to 2008, he held the position of first secretary of the PS federation of Pas-de-Calais. from Calais. He attained the coveted title of first quaestor of the National Assembly.

Locally, he held positions as vice-president of the -Pas-de-Calais regional council and also devoted himself to the development of intercommunality. One of his favorite themes was the reconversion of the mining basin.

This political career has been somewhat marred by convictions for irregularities as mayor and president of the Pas-de-Calais management center.

Many tributes

Numerous tributes, from several political sides, were paid to the politician following the announcement of his death.

“Our paths ended up diverging, but Serge will forever remain one of our great “First Federals”, the voice of a powerful Federation, the words of extraordinary elected officials and activists,” greets the PS federation of Pas-de -Calais.

“As First Secretary of the socialist federation of Pas-de-Calais, he always supported the action of the left-wing majority in the department, never hesitating to participate in our work and systematically promote it. He was a man committed, erudite, close to the population while being open to the world. We send our most sincere condolences to his family and loved ones,” responded the group of socialist elected officials at the Pas-de-Calais departmental council.

Ludovic Pajot, the RN mayor and former deputy for the 10th constituency of Pas-de-Calais, also paid tribute to his predecessor, saluting a “man attached to Bruay-la Buissière”.

The PS senator from Pas-de-Calais, Jérôme Darras joined the tributes, as did the former first secretary of the PS, Jean-Christophe Cambadélis.
