the mayor of Vaux-sur-Mer, victim of a heart attack while driving, hits two cyclists

The mayor of Vaux-sur-Mer Patrice Libelli (65) is in serious condition after a heart attack. The elected official, who is also a departmental councilor, lost consciousness while he was at the wheel of his car, this Sunday morning around 11:15 a.m., and while he was driving on Avenue des Chevreuils, in Royan, in the direction of Vaux.

His vehicle left its lane and struck two cyclists who were traveling in the other direction on the cycle path. One of the two, a woman, was injured in the head and transported to the hospital center. We don’t know the severity of his injury.

Two vehicles from the SMUR (Mobile Emergency and Resuscitation Structure) were dispatched to the site as well as the firefighters and the police. The elected official was taken care of for a good while to try to stabilize his state of health before also being evacuated to the Saintes hospital. His second deputy at town hall, Jean-Michel Grasset, quickly went to the scene of the accident where the deputy mayor of Royan Dominique Bergerot was also present.

Patrice Libelli was elected departmental councilor in 2021 with Marie-Pierre Quentin.

Aged 65, Patrice Libelli was elected mayor of Vaux-sur-Mer in 2020 and in 2021 departmental councilor alongside Marie-Pierre Quentin. This Saturday again, he was present at the awards ceremony for the seventh edition of the Swimrun Côte de Beauté in Royan. A sports lover, the chosen one was also in sportswear at the time of his heart attack. Which suggests that he was perhaps returning from a run or another sporting activity.
