Sunday September 29, 2024, the 350 sheep of the Iriberri shepherds will return to Aillas (Gironde) after their summer pasture in the Pyrenees.

The “Arrival of Transhumance” association is organizing a festive day to celebrate this 340 km adventure.

Activities for the return of transhumance

On the program: a farmers’ market and various activities that will celebrate rurality. The association’s volunteers organized, as usual, the festivities which will celebrate this 24e arrival of transhumance.

It is after two months of summer pastures, near Lake Estaing in the Hautes-Pyrénées, and after three weeks of transhumance, that Txomin, Pauline and Stéphane Iriberri and their sheep return to Aillas.

Like every year, the walkers meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Aillas church to go meet the shepherds and their herd who will have spent the night in Cauvignac.

Back around noon in Aillas, on the sports plain, many artisan exhibitors will be installed: herbalists, beekeepers, cutlers, interior decorators, etc.

A restoration will also be offered with producers who will showcase their products: grilled meats, fries, ice creams, sweets, jams, wine and craft beer from Bazas. And of course, the shepherd will sell his cheese production on a stand.

The Aillas parents’ association will organize, in the afternoon, entertainment for children. A competition for the most beautiful drawing on the theme of sheep will be offered.

Afternoon entertainment

There will also be a book exhibition around transhumance in the Pyrenees.

The young firefighters of Aillas-Grignols will offer an initiation. Lous de Bazats will be present for the musical entertainment. There will also be zumba, a folk group and many others…
