Swiss cyclist Muriel Furrer has died

On Thursday, 18-year-old Swiss Muriel Furrer crashed during the U19 women’s road race at the Road Cycling World Championships in Zurich. Hospitalized following head trauma, she died on Friday the day after her accident at the University Hospital of Zurich, announced the Swiss Cycling Federation.

“With the disappearance of Muriel Furrer, the international cycling community loses a rider who had a future ahead of her,” said the association. This tragedy occurs a little more than fifteen months after the loss of Gino Mäder in the Tour de Suisse. He too died the day after his fall in the Albula pass.

Muriel Furrer was considered an emerging talent in Swiss cycling. In June, she became Swiss junior vice-champion on the road and in the time trial. She also distinguished herself in cyclo-cross and mountain biking, a discipline in which she won team bronze at the European Championships in May. She lived in Egg, not far from Uster, where the start of the junior road race was given on Thursday.
