THE PREFECT OF DAKAR PROHIBITS THE GATHERING OF THE WORKSHOP

(SenePlus) – The prefect of the Dakar department, Chérif Mouhamadou M’Blondin Ndiaye, rejected the request for a gathering of the Alliance for the Transparency of Elections (ATEL) scheduled for September 27, 2024 at the Place de la Nation. In a letter dated the same day, the prefect motivated his decision by the risk of disruption to traffic and urban mobility.

The ATEL had requested authorization to organize a demonstration from 2 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Place de la Nation. However, the investigation report from the competent services highlighted the proximity of the site to the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) traffic lane. The prefect considers that the occupation of this space “risks creating overflows on the reserved and general traffic lanes and at the same time affecting its mobility as well as that of people and their property.”

Despite a proposal to relocate to a site deemed more appropriate, the organizers maintained their initial choice. Faced with this refusal, the prefect was forced not to respond favorably to the ATEL’s request.
