The Global AI Index 2024: Morocco must do better

Morocco’s recent ranking of 79th (out of 83 countries) in the Global AI Index highlights an alarming reality for a country aspiring to play a significant role in the global digital economy. This result contrasts with the progress of Tunisia, a North African neighbor that has been better able to mobilize its resources to climb the ranks.

To reverse this trend, strategic actions are needed, particularly in education and research. Analyzing the data provided by The Global AI Index 2024, it is important that Morocco must review its educational programs to train the next generation of AI talents. Particular attention should be paid to technological disciplines from the secondary level and to the establishment of partnerships between universities and companies.

Support for research projects, through grants and tax incentives, will be essential to stimulate innovation. In parallel, the creation of technology hubs could be the driving force for collaboration between researchers, start-ups and large companies, thus accelerating the industrialization of AI solutions.

It is crucial to develop public-private partnerships, allowing AI to become a real driver of job creation and economic transformation. The future of AI in Morocco depends on this collective mobilization and the implementation of an ambitious and coherent strategy.
