In Corsica, the big boom in cars without a license

Dand the admission of a teacher from the Montesoro school complex, which houses the largest high school on the island, in (Haute-Corse): “It’s simply mind-blowing.” A few years ago, this teacher was used to seeing students arrive at class on a scooter. Now, a growing number of teenagers are arriving at the high school in unlicensed cars. Every day, around thirty VSPs, the acronym for unlicensed cars, are parked near the school.

“It’s a fashion phenomenon among young people,” notes Alain Rivoira, dealer of the Ligier and Microcar brands, in Biguglia (Haute-Corse), two manufacturers specializing in light quadricycles. Sales are constantly increasing, and most purchases are for teenagers.”

This automotive professional could not be more right. Because in five years, registrations of these VSPs have doubled on the island. Last year, 621 cars were registered in Corsica compared to around 300 in 2018. In 2021, the increase was… 127% compared to the previous year, almost three times more than the national average (47%), according to AAA Data, an expert in data on the French vehicle fleet.
