Valais moves in force to secure the Rhône quickly

Faced with the recent massive floods that ravaged the Sierre-Chippis region, the Valais State Council is activating emergency measures to be able to intervene and secure the area.

To gain maximum time, the government invoked the general police clause. “This exceptional provision makes it possible to bypass the usual administrative procedures, such as public inquiry and calls for tender, for urgent work,” he recalls. The companies affected by the damage were putting strong pressure on the State to act quickly. They seem to have been heard.

The idea is to deconstruct the railway bridge connecting Chippis to the Swiss network or to install a device to raise it in the event of a flood. In addition, additional work is ordered to improve the safety of the right and left banks of the Rhone, such as the construction of dikes and the installation of more durable anti-flood structures.

These actions must be carried out during the winter of 2024-2025, a period of low water, to avoid any delay that would increase the risks for the population. These emergency measures are essential while waiting for the implementation of longer-term solutions.

As a reminder, at the end of June 2024, intense rainfall caused flooding of the Rhône, leading to massive flooding, the disappearance of two people and considerable damage.
