Marseille and its region have been experiencing heavy rain since midday on Wednesday, September 4. Several streets are beginning to be partially flooded.

An orange alert, and already consequences. For several hours this Wednesday, September 4, the city of Marseille has seen lightning flashes and observed the rainwater that continues to fall.

Heavy rain has been falling continuously since around midday on the Phocaean city, as evidenced by numerous images shared on social networks by Marseille residents.

Near the Prado beach for example, the roads are under water, as can be seen in this image captured in front of a bus stop during the afternoon. In addition, the Prado Carénage tunnel is closed in the Aubagne Toulon direction.

According to BFMTV meteorologist Guillaume Séchet, the south-east of the Marseille metropolitan area is the most affected area with rainfall totals having quickly exceeded 50 millimetres. In some places, there is now nearly 100mm of rain.

The orange alert for rain, floods and storms was extended to Bouches-du-Rhône by Météo-France this Wednesday afternoon. It is expected to extend until the morning of Thursday, September 5.

Delta’s first evening cancelled

As a result of the severe weather, the first evening of the 10th edition of the Delta Festival was urgently cancelled by the organisers. “Following the violent storm and heavy downpours at the festival, Wednesday is cancelled,” the festival said on its Instagram account.

Artists such as Julien Granel, Caravan Palace, Clara Cuvé and Adiel were expected on the four stages. The arrival of SCH, the Marseille rapper who was supposed to open the show, had been cancelled after a fatal shooting at the exit of one of his concerts a week earlier in La Grande-Motte.
