In Lévis, around 100 people are out of work due to the cessation of activities of the pharmaceutical company Pharmalab.
The company on Boulevard Guillaume-Couture, which is a wholesaler of pharmaceutical products and food products, says it is experiencing economic and financial difficulties.
Employees learned the news when they reported to work on Monday morning after their annual vacation period.
See Mathieu Boivin’s report in the video linked to the article.
Security agents were waiting for them to give them a letter – a general notice of temporary layoff – advising them that the measure was effective immediately and for a period of at least six months.
It should be noted that this so-called temporary layoff allows Pharmalab to pay severance bonuses to its employees for the time being.
In the letter, Pharmalab President Dawn Halkuff said the company was “presently facing very serious difficulties” and that it should “take all steps to try to ensure [sa] survival”.
The employees of the company met on the spot by Noovo Info claimed to be unhappy to have been placed in front of the fait accompli and to feel anxiety and uncertainty.
The mayor of Lévis, Gilles Lehouillier, also expressed his dissatisfaction with this news. “It is distressing and a pity to learn this morning of these layoffs at this plant which had been well established in Lévis for more than 70 years. My thoughts are with the employees and their families,” he said.
