Zurich city police have arrested a pensioner for illegally cutting down around 100 trees in a forest in the southwest of the city. Caught in the act, the 78-year-old man says he wanted to provide more light and warmth to the giant conifers.

The arrest of the septuagenarian took place last Thursday, the municipal police said on Tuesday. In late April, a city forestry worker filed a complaint after discovering that more than 100 trees had been felled illegally in a forest. On the spot, the police noted that these facts were apparently recent. Branches of some giant conifers had also been sawn off.

The police then launched a major search operation, which resulted in the arrest of the pensioner last Thursday around 10:00 p.m., in flagrante delicto. According to his first explanations, the man acted to give more light and heat to the big sequoias. The damage caused reached more than 100,000 francs. The septuagenarian will have to answer for his actions in court.
