Former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who aspires to succeed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau after slamming the cabinet door, is calling for four debates between candidates in the Liberal leadership race, including two in French.

In a message sent Friday by a distribution list to people who are registered on it, through her campaign website, the former deputy prime minister pleads for these oratory contests to take place “as quickly as possible”.

“Everyone deserves to see us debate our ideas and the path forward for our party and our country,” it reads.

Mme Freeland also asks each of his supporters to be ready to run as a candidate in the next federal election, in addition to committing — if elected — to remaining an MP “whatever the outcome of this leadership race.”

“By committing to being part of this team for the long term, we can show Canadians that we are not here for ourselves, but for them,” added the aspiring leader.

It also remains to be seen whether the Liberals will manage to remain in power at the end of the next election, with the Conservatives enjoying a large lead in voting intentions for more than a year.

Mme Freeland is one of seven potential candidates who sent their files to the Liberal Party of Canada on Thursday, which includes a payment of $50,000. The approval that must follow from the political party and Elections Canada should take several more days.
