Future tram line T10: the Métropole de provides a first progress update on the construction site

A little over three months after the first welding, the future T10 tram line continues to progress. This Friday, January 24, the Métropole de made a first progress update on the work in Saint-Fons.

The first weld was carried out on October 7 and a little over three months after the start of work, the future T10 tram line continues to progress. As a reminder, the latter must connect Vénissieux station to Halle Tony Garnier, in the 7th arrondissement of Lyon, passing in particular through the town of Saint-Fons, in 25 minutes. And while this future tram line must be operational in the first half of 2026, the Métropole de Lyon and its president Bruno Bernard carried out a first progress update on the construction site this Friday, January 24 in Saint-Fons where a center will be located storage and maintenance.

Maintenance building, large washing area, etc.

With a budget of 295 million euros, including financial support from the State of 15.8 million euros (by call for projects), this vast project therefore provides for the creation of a storage and maintenance of 26,000 m2 between Saint-Fons and Lyon to meet the needs of rolling stock. On site, the future building is taking shape and will eventually be able to accommodate 30 trains measuring 43 meters long. The earthworks began in July, specifies Sytral, followed by civil engineering works in August and the framework last November. Work on the future railway was launched at the beginning of January.

In the immediate vicinity, a large washing area is also under construction, as well as a future service station building in which machines will fill the tram sand pits (which guarantee wheel grip). Machines to wash tram wheels will also be created. The latter will use 85% recycled water and the rest will be rainwater. The water storage means deployed on site amount to 1,000 m3 and everything will be managed directly on the site.

“Crazy operations”

Ahead of the project, the Métropole de Lyon once again welcomed the result of the developments carried out at the Laurent Bonnevay ring road, the structure of which was pre-constructed in the first half of 2024, then put in place last August. “These are really crazy operations”declared Bruno Bernard, before adding, “if we can carry out this type of operation, it is above all thanks to the Lyon model” (the Métropole de Lyon has owned the ring road since its creation in 2015: editor’s note). A tunnel 4.50 meters high, 13.50 meters wide and weighing 4,100 tonnes now passes under the ring road so that trams can pass.

Facilities for pedestrians and cycle paths have also been partly created. They will be accompanied by green spaces all around the site. Many trees and shrubs, as well as a flowery meadow, will emerge. For the deputy mayor of Saint-Fons, Lanouar Sghaier, this future T10 tram line is a “grand moment.” And to conclude: “Finally the commune of Saint-Fons is attached to the Lyon metropolis.” The Lyon Metropolis already estimates that 22,000 travelers daily will use the future T10 tram line.
