Saint-Louis, Jan 23 (APS)-A parliamentary mission met on Wednesday populations and players in fishing in Saint-Louis (North), for exchanges that brought out the need to give more consideration to this sector.
The mission, organized in concert with the Civil Forum, was led by deputy Babacar Ndiaye, president of the energy commission and mineral resources of the National Assembly.
“We are here, as part of our parliamentary mission. We met the fishermen of Saint-Louis and there, we have just finished our meeting with the population, the different actors or even the different strata of the population of Saint-Louis, “said the parliamentarian, on the sidelines of a meeting held at the youth area of Saint-Louis.
“The exchanges we have had today with the fishermen, show us that they are people who know each other. People who master their sector, “said deputy Babacar Ndiaye, in the presence of Birahim Seck, coordinator of the civil forum which activates in good governance and the fight against corruption.
The deputy secretary of the local artisanal fishing council (CLPA), Fama Sarr, as well as the former deputy Thiamba Seck, also took part in this activity.
The parliamentarian pleaded for “more respect and consideration” towards actors in the fishing sector. He also mentioned the issue of the breach, promising to visit the site in question soon.
The breach of Saint-Louis, originally, was a thin arrow of sand a few hundred meters wide, which protects the city from the assault of the waves. Until 2003, she prevented a rapid evacuation from the waters of the river during the floods because it lengthened for about thirty kilometers south of the city.
The artificial opening of a breach, 7 kilometers south of the city, following the flood of October 2003, radically changed the flooding of the city, to the point that the city has become more vulnerable to an increase, even moderate, of the average sea level.

“The question of the breach returned to our exchanges. Besides, we are going to return to Saint-Louis to only visit the breach and see what is really going on, “he promised.
There is also, he says, an old complaint of the fishermen of Saint-Louis, which concerns the installation of fishing ports to at least try to bypass the breach and avoid the accidents it can cause.
The deputy also mentioned the issue of reefs and the fishy area of Diattara, occupied by a gas operating platform, inviting the authorities to take this question seriously.
